| Phipps Arch is one of the premier arches in the Grand
Staircase-Escalante National Monument; however, it can be difficult to find. Phipps Wash is a wonderful canyon experience contrasting a lush riparian ecosystem with the surrounding harsh desert environment. |
|
| Be sure to bring along plenty of film for the camera on this adventure! We'll begin with a hike overland down into the stunning red rocks of Phipps Wash. The scenery rivals Sedona, but the quiet and solitude are incomparable. Birds and other wildlife abound in the rich streamside environment of lower Phipps Wash. The streaked red walls of the canyon contrast nicely with the deep greens of mature Fremont cottonwoods growing in the canyon bottom. Then it's on to Phipps Arch, an exciting ascent out of the canyon to a wonderland of exposed slickrock domes, hoodoos, and the arch. |
| This is a moderate adventure. There
is about six miles of hiking involved with a two hundred foot climb out of the canyon to
the arch. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes (boots recommended) and a daypack are required.
The Phipps Wash
Adventure departs Escalante daily. This adventure takes about five and a half hours.
To ensure your enjoyment, we will take no
